About the Daily Star

Purpose:

As the only local, daily newspaper serving readers in Tangipahoa Parish and the Florida Parishes, the Daily Star offers award-winning local advertising, news, features and commentary chronicling the daily lives of the people in the community. The goal of the Daily Star has always been to provide responsible and reliable journalism. Mark Twain once said that the difference between the perfect word and the almost perfect word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. The Daily Star strives constantly to bring you the perfect word, and by doing so, the most complete local coverage of the people and events in your community. All of us at the Daily Star hope you will make the paper a part of your daily lives. All news is important to us and to our readers. Please share your news with us and let us know how we can better serve you. The Daily and Sunday Star is your newspaper. It belongs to each of you.

History:

The Daily Star was first published in November 1959 as the semi-weekly Hammond Press. The 36 full-time and part-time employees put the paper together at the downtown office on South Oak Street, distributing 5,000 copies via U.S. Mail. Later that same month, the paper's name changed to the Daily Item and began publishing every weekday morning in tabloid form. In 1961, the name changed to the Daily Star and the operation moved to the Lobue Building at 109 S. Cate St. in Hammond. After Robert J. Mathes became publisher in 1962, subscriptions began to expand at a furious rate, jumping up from 1,000 to 6,000 in two years. The growth was so rapid that the previous day's subscriber total was printed on the front page daily from July 1963 to September 1965. In 1967 the Daily Star moved to another downtown office building located at Southwest Railroad and Morris Avenue. The paper would not move again for 20 years, until it was relocated at the current South Morrison Boulevard location in 1985. The Daily Star has won numerous Louisiana Press Association awards throughout the years including awards for best newspaper design, editorial, news coverage, investigative reporting, depth reporting, photo features, special section content and general excellence. For three consecutive years, from 1996 to 1998, the Daily Star received the LPA's Best Newspaper of the Year Ward. Now a part of the Paxton Media Group, the paper is under the leadership of General Manager Michelle Gallo and longtime Executive Editor Lil Mirando.
