ALBANY — Loranger went into Thursday's District 10-3A showdown against Albany looking to stay perfect while the Hornets sought to put some pressure on the Wolves in the district race.
It was the Wolves (13-9, 4-0) that kept the pressure on the Hornets (5-16, 2-2) as Loranger downed Albany 11-0 in five innings to stay unbeaten in 10-3A play.
"I tell the guys all the time that we need to be aggressive," Wolves head coach Jason Helmstetter said. "If we stand still, we don't make things happen."
Loranger rapped out 11 hits against Albany pitchers in support of starting pitcher Shea Edwards, who struck out eight hitters and walked one while giving up one hit.
"Once he got in a groove after the second inning, he did a great job," Albany head coach Chad Goulas said. "He got in a rhythm, and kept us off-balance."
Loranger struck the first blow in the top of the first inning. Zack Seringy singled to left off Albany starter Keith Newell and stole second. Kyle Wheeler drove in Seringy with a base knock to left to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Albany threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the first, but Dustin Rodriguez was caught in a rundown between third and home to end the inning.
Jake Artigue led off the top of the second with a double to left, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch. Josh DePhillips drew a walk and scored on Wheeler's groundout to third to increase the lead to 3-0.
"By getting our guys on the move with some hit-and-runs and steals, it gets our guys more relaxed at the plate," Helmstetter said.
The Wolves added two more runs in the third inning. Tyler Giacone led off with a walk, and Albany pulled Newell to put Justin McKnight on the mound. Tyler Kendrick singled to left to drive in Giacone. Kendrick scored as Artigue doubled to right-center to give Loranger a 5-0 lead.
"I'm not sure if coach got a joystick in his dugout, but it seemed like it feel wherever we weren't," Goulas said.
Bryce Himel's RBI single in the fourth increased the lead to 6-0 before Loranger scored five in the fifth to push the lead into double digits.
Meanwhile, District 7-5A returns to action this afternoon for Hammond and Ponchatoula. The Tors (0-4 in 7-5A) head to Mandeville while the Wave (13-5, 3-1) entertain St. Paul's. Both games are set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
