SLAMMING IT HOME—Southeastern’s Patrick Sullivan dunks over Dillard’s Joshua Mitchell in the first half of the Lions’ 99-59 victory Saturday afternoon. By Mike Kiral
Southeastern head coach Jim Yarbrough knows in basketball, you don't own your shots, you just kind of rent them for while.

The Lions did a pretty good job of paying the rent Saturday against Dillard.

Southeastern shot 67.9 percent from the field in the first half and 61.4 percent overall in rolling to a 99-59 non-conference victory in the University Center.

"We really attacked well and they were confident when they shot," Yarbrough said. "That's something big that we have been talking about, knowing when the shots come off the break and in the halfcourt offense and then from there, being confident when we shoot the basketball. Hopefully we can continue to do that."

Kevyn Green led the way with a career-high 30 points for the Lions (2-3) who moved to 2-0 in the University Center this season. Green has led SLU in scoring in four of the five games but was held to nine points in a 74-63 loss at Texas Tech Tuesday. Green was 11-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-6 on 3-pointers.

"I didn't even know," Green said of finding out he had set a career high. "I was trying to go out and bounce back from the last game. That was my intention - trying to come out here and get a win."

Chris Cyprian also set a career-high with 16 points. Patrick Sullivan contributed 13 points and seven rebounds while Robert Tibbs pulled down 11 boards while adding eight points.

David Manning led Dillard (2-3) with 16 points while Michael Bridges had 15 points and nine rebounds.

If Yarbrough was worried about a let down following the loss against Texas Tech, the Lions quickly put those fears to rest. There was one tie, at 2-all, before SLU went on an 18-2 run. Green buried 3-pointers on three straight possessions to make it 20-4 with 14:29 left in the first half. After Dillard got back on the scoreboard on a jumper by Bridges , Antonio Pope slammed in an alley-oop from Brandon Fortenberry. Three-pointers by Jeremy Dunbar and Cyprian pushed the Lions' lead to 37-12 with 9:03 left in the half.

Cyprian would be fouled after grabbing a steal, hitting both shots to give SLU a 52-23 lead with 1:58 left in the half. The Lions scored 17 points off nine Dillard turnovers in the half. Dillard shot 38.5 percent in the first 20 minutes and 37.3 percent for the game.

“I thought our defensive intensity was pretty good,” Yarbrough said. “We needed that. We needed to create some things. Every time we had a timeout, we talked about deflections and effort and I thought every time we came back from a timeout, we'd have a couple of deflections and that creates easy baskets. I thought we put a little fear in them tonight and that was good. We kind of made them think and hesitate and worry about what we were going to do to them. They didn't shoot the ball particularly well. I think those quick hands and quick feet obviously created a number of easy baskets which blew the game open.”

SLU kept up the intensity to open the second half, increasing the lead to 72-31 on Green's jumper with 14:17 remaining. Dillard got no closer than 32 the rest of the way.

“Tonight was a stat-stuffer type game and I'm glad we were able to do it,” Yarbrough said. “Sometimes you get in these games and you kind of muddle through or you're flat and we were not that tonight. At 1-3 and having played pretty well on the road several times but not coming away with a win like we really wanted to in several of those games, it was important for us to get back to friendly confines and play well and I thought our guys did that for the most part. There were very few let downs until late in the second half. I thought our guys had focus and energy and it was really good to see them dispatch somebody in the kind of matter they probably should have.”

Southeastern will be looking to break a three-game road losing streak when it travels to in-state rival Southern Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Lions return home Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off against Southern-New Orleans.
